Replace-By-Fee (RBF) is a Bitcoin feature that enables users to replace unconfirmed transactions so they can be rebroadcasted with a higher fee. This feature increases the chance the transaction will be picked up by miners and receive confirmation on the blockchain. It is typically used in times of high network congestion when fee rates fluctuate causing lower fee transactions to get stuck in the mempool.
What are the risks?
BitPay Invoices are protected against double-spending or the transaction being replaced. One blockchain confirmation is required before the invoice is marked as paid. RBF can be used on BitPay Invoices transaction if they get stuck.
If you're receiving a peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction, you'll want to wait for blockchain confirmation to ensure the Bitcoin is successfully received in your wallet. Once the transaction is confirmed, the transaction cannot be replaced. You can check the status of your transaction using any blockchain explorer or BitPay Insight.
How can I use RBF with the BitPay Wallet?
Select the unconfirmed Bitcoin transaction in your wallet to see the RBF option and speed up. Using RBF requires additional confirmed Bitcoin in your wallet.
