Gas is a transaction fee paid on a blockchain network, like Ethereum or Polygon, to incentivize miners or validators to process and verify transactions. The amount of gas required to send a transaction will depend on the network's current state and the transaction complexity.
- Ethereum blockchain gas fees are paid in Ethereum.
- Ethereum Layer 2 blockchains (Arbitrum, Base, Optimism) gas fees are paid in Ethereum.
- Polygon blockchain gas fees are paid in POL (formerly MATIC)
If you're trying to send a token (such as USDC, USDT, etc), you'll need gas at the same address as the token. Gas fees cannot be paid with token balance.
Where can I purchase gas?
Ethereum (ETH) or POL (POL) can be purchased using the BitPay app on iOS or Android, the BitPay website, or a cryptocurrency exchange of your choice and sent to your BitPay Wallet.
