What is BitPay ID?
To fulfill regulatory obligations and meet compliance standards, BitPay requires applicants to submit personal information before accessing BitPay products. BitPay ID is used as an identity verification tool and is linked directly to a BitPay account.
Depending on the data available, exact verification requirements may differ. To authenticate identity documents and perform facial liveness checks, BitPay utilizes Sumsub services. Sumsub confirms the validity of the applicant's submitted identity documents and verifies that they match the live facial check.
BitPay and Sumsub Data Collection
- Basic Details: Email address and password.
- Identity Data: Sumsub collects ID documents, photos, and facial biometrics strictly to perform identity proofing, anti-money laundering (AML), and know-your-customer (KYC) checks.
- No Selling of Data: BitPay does not sell your personal data. Sumsub does not sell personal user information or share biometric data with third-party advertisers.
- Encrypted Servers: Data is kept on secure servers using modern encryption standards.
Why is verification required?
BitPay is required by applicable laws and regulations to collect information about shoppers for any transactions using our service. This includes paying a BitPay Invoice, buying a gift card, or using BitPay products. Verification is not required to use the BitPay Wallet as it's considered self-custody. Business users who wish to make payments or receive refunds must complete ID verification as individuals.
