Paying a BitPay Invoice
- Generate the Invoice: Start by checking out with a BitPay Merchant or initiating a payment directly within the BitPay app.
- Log in or Create a BitPay Account
- Select Payment Details: Choose your preferred payment wallet and the cryptocurrency you wish to use.
- Choose a Payment Method: Submit the payment by either selecting Pay in Wallet, scanning the invoice's QR code with your wallet, or by copying and pasting the provided payment URL or address into your wallet.
- Submit Payment: Complete the transaction.
Log in or Create a BitPay Account
To submit a BitPay Invoice payment, you must first log in or create a BitPay account. If you have already completed the BitPay ID verification process, you can proceed directly to the invoice. Otherwise, verification is required before continuing.
Generating a BitPay Invoice
When you choose BitPay at a merchant checkout, you will be redirected to the BitPay login or sign-up page. Once logged in with an approved BitPay account, the invoice will be automatically generated.
If you are making a purchase in the BitPay app (such as a gift card purchase), the invoice will be created in the app. Ensure you’ve linked your BitPay account to the BitPay app and have a sufficient balance in your BitPay Wallet.
Selecting the Payment Wallet and Supported Cryptocurrency
Search for your wallet provider on the invoice. BitPay is compatible with over 100 popular cryptocurrency wallets, including WalletConnect. Coinbase account payments are also available if you reside within the United States.
The invoice will show the supported payment currencies available for the generated invoice. Choose the cryptocurrency you wish to use for the payment. If your preferred cryptocurrency is not available, it may not be supported for payment, or your wallet may not hold any supported payment cryptocurrencies. Supported payment cryptocurrencies can vary by shopper or merchant location.
Choosing a Payment Method
- Payment Protocol Wallets: Use the BitPay Wallet or other Payment Protocol-compatible wallets. To autofill the invoice details, you can scan the QR code, copy and paste the payment URL, or select "Pay in Wallet."
- WalletConnect: Pairing your wallet with WalletConnect will automatically populate the invoice details.
- Peer-to-Peer Payments: If sending a payment from a wallet that doesn’t support Payment Protocol, the invoice details will be displayed. You must carefully copy the exact payment address and the exact amount due, and then paste them into your wallet's "Send" or "Pay" section. A payment will not be accepted and will require a refund if the exact amount due is not sent.
- Exchange Payments: Coinbase account payments are available if you reside within the United States. All other payments sent from exchanges are not supported and will likely result in a payment error and refund.
Wait for Confirmation
Once payment is submitted, the transaction must receive confirmation on the blockchain for the invoice to be marked as paid. Please note that delays in blockchain confirmation can occur due to network congestion.
Tips for a Successful Payment Experience
- Use a Payment Protocol-Enabled Wallet: BitPay recommends using a wallet that supports the Payment Protocol (such as the BitPay Wallet). This protocol automatically ensures the correct payment amount and includes a sufficient network fee, significantly reducing the risk of time-consuming and costly payment errors.
- Submit Payment Within the Time Limit: Ensure your payment is sent within the 15-minute invoice acceptance window. Payments submitted after this window may be rejected and require a refund.
