Paying a BitPay Invoice consists of a few easy steps:
- Generate the invoice by checking out with a BitPay Merchant or initiate a payment in the BitPay app
- Select the payment wallet and then the cryptocurrency
- Choose your payment method by scanning invoice QR code, copying and pasting the payment URL or address
- Submit the payment
Generating a BitPay Invoice
Selecting BitPay when checking out with a BitPay Merchant, you'll be redirected to the BitPay Invoice link. If using the BitPay app to purchase a gift card, load the BitPay Card, or pay a bill using BillPay, the invoice will be generated within the app. Depending on the generated invoice, you may be required to login/sign up or complete BitPay ID.
Selecting the Payment Wallet and Cryptocurrency
Search for your wallet provider on the invoice. BitPay supports over 100 of the most popular cryptocurrency wallets. WalletConnect is another available option when paying a BitPay Invoice.
The generated BitPay Invoice will display supported payment currencies available in your wallet. Select the cryptocurrency you want to use to complete the payment. If you do not see the cryptocurrency you'd like to use, it may not be a supported payment method or your wallet does not contain any supported payment cryptocurrencies. Supported payment cryptocurrencies can vary based on the shopper or merchant's location.

Choosing a Payment Method
- Payment Protocol wallets (such as the BitPay Wallet) autofill invoice details in the payment wallet by scanning the QR code, copying and pasting the payment URL, or selecting Pay in Wallet.
- WalletConnect will autofill invoice details with a paired wallet.
- If sending peer-to-peer payment, invoice details will be displayed. Copy the invoice payment address and exact amount due, then paste it into your wallet's Send or Pay section. If the exact amount due is not sent, the payment will not be accepted and require a refund.
Wait for Confirmation
After completing the payment, wait for the transaction to receive blockchain confirmation. Once confirmed, the invoice will be marked as paid. Increased network congestion can cause delays in blockchain confirmation.
Tips and Notes about BitPay Invoice Payments
- BitPay suggests using a wallet that supports Payment Protocol (such as the BitPay Wallet). Payment Protocol ensures the cryptocurrency you send is exactly the right amount and includes a high enough fee to confirm your transaction. This helps reduce costly time-consuming payment errors.
- Always use a valid email when completing invoice payment in case of a payment error and a refund is needed.
- BitPay ID verification or KYC may be required. BitPay is required by applicable laws and regulations to collect certain information about Shoppers for transactions and refunds over a certain size and, in some regions, for any transaction.
- Ensure you submit your payment within the 15-minute invoice acceptance window or the payment could be rejected and require a refund.
