To begin understanding and using blockchain technology, it's recommended to start by testing on a Testnet network. This approach allows you to learn the fundamentals of testing crypto payments and how cryptocurrency transactions function without the risk of using valuable coins. Testnet coins are specifically for testing transactions or payment integrations and hold no real-world value. Learn more.
To get started, you'll need to install the BitPay app, create a wallet key and Testnet wallet, and then receive Testnet coins from the Testnet faucet.
Supported Cryptocurrencies with Testnet capabilities:
- Bitcoin (BTC) - Testnet4
- Bitcoin Cash (BCH) - Testnet4
- Dogecoin (DOGE) - Testnet3
- Litecoin (LTC) - Testnet4
- Ripple (XRP) - Testnet
After installing the BitPay app, please follow the instructions below to create your key and a Bitcoin Testnet wallet:
- Open the BitPay app and select the + icon, or import wallet equivalent
- Select New Key and then Backup your Recovery Phrase
- Write down the 12-word recovery phrase and secure it (we suggest only using this key for testnet wallets to avoid confusion with non-testnet or mainnet wallets). After verifying the key, real wallets for the default cryptocurrencies will be added to your key, but not a Testnet wallet
- To add a Testnet wallet, scroll down and select + Add Wallet and then select UTXO Wallet
- Select Bitcoin and then select the Add Wallet
- Select Show Advanced Options, check the box for Testnet, and then Add Wallet
Now that the Bitcoin Testnet wallet has been set up, the next step is receiving Testnet coins from a Testnet faucet:
- Open the BitPay app, select your testing key, and then your Testnet wallet
- Select Receive (↘)
- Copy the receiving address in the box by selecting ( ❏ )
- Navigate to the Bitcoin Testnet4 faucet or another Testnet faucet and paste your Testnet wallet address
- The faucet will send you Testnet cryptocurrency
- Within a few minutes, you should see the pending transaction and a balance in your Testnet wallet
When receiving Testnet coins, you want to make sure the coins match the Testnet wallet. I.E. Testnet4 coins for a Testnet4 wallet. Here are Testnet faucets to obtain Testnet coins.
- Bitcoin Cash (BCH) - Testnet4
- Dogecoin (DOGE) - Testnet3
- Litecoin (LTC) - Testnet4
- Ripple (XRP) - Testnet
