The BitPay Wallet is a self-custody wallet and your cryptocurrency is secured by securing or writing down your seed or 12-word recovery phrase. BitPay does not store your recovery phrase or have access to your funds.
To restore your wallet if your device is broken, lost, stolen, or the app is uninstalled, you must use the 12-word recovery phrase you receive when creating a wallet. Without this recovery phrase, BitPay cannot recover your funds.
To create a BitPay Wallet, download the BitPay app:
- App Store (iOS)
- Google Play Store (Android)
- Microsoft Store (Windows)
- App Store (Mac)
- Snap Store (Linux)
After the installation, open the app and follow the wizard to create your wallet. Before using your wallet, ensure you've backed up or written down your 12-word recovery phrase. The 12-word recovery phrase is how you secure your wallet, so this step is extremely important.
To create a new wallet key and wallet:
- Open BitPay app and select Create, Import, or join a shared wallet
- Select New Key
- Select the currencies or tokens you wish to add
- Select Add Wallet
- Back up your key by writing down and securing your 12-word recovery phrase
To create a wallet under an existing key:
- Open the BitPay app and select the key where you'd like to add a new wallet
- Scroll down to + Add Wallet
- Select either Basic Wallet (Single signer) or Multisig Wallet (multiple signers)
- Select the currencies or tokens you wish to add
- Select Add Wallet
